Breighton Pre-Hibernation Fly-in 7th October 2012

The weather during 2012 resulted in many events being cancelled across the country so it seemed a little optimistic to expect the planned pre-hibernation fly-in to benefit from good weather but the day turned out to be one of the best of the year weatherwise which resulted in many pilots flying in. It was a beautiful sunny day with little wind. Ideal for flying.

Breighton Wings and Wheels 2nd September 2012

After bad weather caused the cancellation of the planned Wings and Wheels event the decision to try again at a later date in combination with the planned Helicopter fly-in proved to be a wise one. There was some cloud but as the day progressed the sun shone and there were plenty of visiting aircraft. The BBMF Spitfire arrived dead on time and gave a superb display.

Breighton Summer Madness Fly-In 5th August 2012

Thankfully the weather justified the use of Summer in the name of this months fly-in. Breighton however did seem to be in a bubble as storm clouds could be seen in the distance and this kept the activity mainly local. There was however plenty of flying the highlight of which has to be Taff flying inverted.

Breighton May-hem 6th May 2012

Held on the Sunday of the Bank holiday weekend the "May-hem" fly-in was well attended. At times there were some dark clouds but generally fine weather with some sunshine made it a pleasant Spring day. Due to the direction of the light breeze (which did add a little chill) the aircraft came in to land from the direction of the road/hedge which gives a better view. Most of the Real Aeroplane aircraft managed to get airborne at some point during the day.

Breighton April Fools Fly-in 1st April 2012

This was the second planned Fly-in at Breighton in 2012. The earlier March one suffered from bad weather but April 1st started with a gentle breeze and blue sky. The wind did add a little chill to the proceedings but it turned out to be a lovely April day with lots of aircraft and pilots visiting.

Easter Sunday saw a good turnout at Breighton. The airfield seemed to be just on the edge of some good weather and suffered from cloud/hazy sunshine for most of the day but at least the winds was light.

Breighton Helicopter Fly-In September 18th 2011

Sunday 18th September started off sunny with a gentle breeze. Later on heavy showers could be seen in the distance but for the most part the sun shone for the Helicopter Fly-In. An RAF Merlin helicopter did a flypast but I arrived after that but in time to see a Bell 47 and the new Robinson R66. A collection was made for the Yorkshire Air ambulance that raised over �700 for this worthy cause.

Breighton July 23rd 2005

The Annual International Classic Aircraft Fly-in held at Breighton on 23rd and 24th July 2005. Highlights included a display by Mustangs Susy, Janie and Big Beautiful Doll. The resident Hurricane also put on a fine display. There were re-enactors, flour bombing and lots more aircraft. A finale flypast by many of the aircraft including 2 chipmunks ended Saturday on a high note.

Breighton June 12th 2011 Ladies Day Fly-In

At home June 12th started with a clear blue sky and little wind raising hope that after the last two events at Breighton had suffered from the weather it would be 3rd time lucky. It was not to be. By the time we arrived at Breighton the clouds had arrived and a tricky crosswind was blowing the windsock. Sadly this resulted in few visiting aircraft. Four of the Breighton based aircraft were flown in formation and the end of their flight coincided with the rain arriving.

Sunday 22nd August ended up being a very busy Fly-in at Breighton. Blue sky with a few white clouds encouraged plenty of pilots to visit - sadly the bacon sandwiches ran out before I could get mine! This was Breighton at it's best with lots of flying and also a visit by a group of SAAB owners (the wheeled variety not the jet powered ones). Everybody seemed to have a great day.

Large Model Association Rufforth 2010

The Large Model association airshow was held over the weekend of 14th and 15th of August 2010. Saturday was a bit gusty but on Sunday there was not as much wind and plenty of sunshine. Highlights included the ever popular Comet airliner and Victor bomber. These photos were taken on the Sunday.

Yorkshire Airshow 2005

The Yorkshire Airshow 2005 was held at Elvington near York on the weekend of 20/21 August 2005. Both days benefitted from bright sunshine with most of Sunday having cloudless skies. The theme of the show was "Military Might" and the armed forces provided most of the displays. On both days the flying display was opened by the RAF Falcons parachute team who dropped into the show from their C130 Hercules which then performed a flypast. An amazing and much waited for sight was the Eurofighter Typhoon which put on a superb display. Other participants included a Tornado GR4 of XV squadron, the Red Arrows and the wonderful Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire, Hurricane & Lancaster.

Sunday 4th June started with clear blue skies but the cloud soon moved in together with the odd shower. This did not spoil the day at Breighton though with many visiting aircraft and displays by the resident machines leading to an action packed day. Later in the afternoon the blue sky returned.

Exercise Halifax Shadow and RAC D-Day Fly-in Breighton June 6th

Held over the weekend of 5/6th June 2010. Exercise Halifax Shadow and RAC D-Day Fly-in was a combination of a 78 Squadron memorial and Breighton Fly-in. Saturday had far better weather than Sunday. These photos are from Sunday. Due to the conditions the BBMF Spitfire was unable to perform a flypast and it was left to an RAF Sea King and Merlin to find their way through the cloud to perform a flypast over nearby Bubwith church and the airfield. Breighton was a WWII base and home to 78 Squadron. The current airfield is on a small part of the WWII base.

Held over the weekend of August 8/9th 2009. The large model airshow enjoyed good weather meaning there was a bumper turnout. These photos were taken on the Sunday. There were three full size displays together with plenty of models. An excellent commentary and plenty of flying made for an enjoyable day. As well as a model vulcan there was the site in the distance of the full size aircraft making her way to displays in other parts of the country.

Yorkshire Air Museum Aircraft ,Vehicles and Visitors

The Yorkshire Air Museum is situated next to Elvington airfield a few miles from the centre of York. It aims to be a living memorial to all the Allied Air Forces personnel who operated from Yorkshire during the Second World War. There are many exhibits including original WWII buildings, uniforms, vehicles and aircraft including a reconstruction of a Halifax bomber. These photographs have been taken at many visits to the museum.

Lincolnshire's Lancaster Association Members' Day 2009

Sunday 27th September 2009 was the date of the Lincolnshire's Lancaster Association Day at the BBMF visitor centre at RAF Coningsby. A sunny start deteriorated as the clouds moved in but the formation flying and displays were excellent. As the BBMF displays finished another aircraft unexpectedly arrived to the delight of the members - the Avro Vulcan XH558 - which put on a first rate display - the icing on the cake at the end of a very enjoyable day.

Breighton "Vans Fly-in" and "At Home" Day September 3rd 2006

Initially planned as a "Vans Fly-In" the strong crosswind meant that very few aircraft flew into Breighton. All was not lost however as the resident aircraft (including the Buchon) put on a fine display and our thanks go to the Breighton pilots for "saving the day".

Yorkshire Air Spectacular - 2005

The Yorkshire Air Spectacular 2005 Giant Model Rally at the Ouse Gliding Club - Rufforth near York. Held over the weekend of 13/14th August. The weather was very poor on the Saturday with ever shortening dry spells giving way to heavy showers. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the participants there was still lots of flying and special mention must go to Colin Hammond who kept the cheerful and informative commentary going through a very wet afternoon.

Breighton - Radial Engine Fly-in and RAC "At Home" Day. A very wet day with grey skies and almost constant drizzle. The Mustang was due to depart to an airshow but due to the weather stayed at home and put on an excellent display with the Hurricane.
