AIR MUSEUM TRY TO SAVE SOLE SURVIVING BLACKBURN BEVERLEY (2003)

Following
the sad closure of the Museum of Military Transport in Beverley, East
Yorkshire, UK, the Yorkshire Air Museum have approached the official
receivers with a view to saving the only surviving
Blackburn Beverley C.1 transport aircraft. The RAF museum tragically
destroyed their own example - XH124.
Used
from the 1950s to 60s before being replaced by the C130
Hercules, these aircraft had rear clamshell doors and large
cargo holds with space in the tail boom for passengers and a hatch for
paratroops.
The
cost of moving the massive Beverley is estimated at £135,000. The
museum is asking for support (www.yorkshireairmuseum.co.uk)
The
aircraft was nearly scrapped before being rescued by the Museum of
Military Transport in Beverley and has been a major attraction and
familiar site for anyone passing through for many years. It is only
hoped that it can be saved again.
